Last month we talked about weightlifting and now this month it's the turn of gymnastics, a second major discipline in our amazing 'Sport of Fitness' that we practise every day in our gym.

One of the most important features of this versatile sport is that you don’t need to use any external weights such as dumbbells, barbells or kettlebells. You perform all of the exercises simply using your own body weight within a certain range of motion (range of motion is the freedom of movement you can achieve in respect of a particular joint).

A brief explanation

First of all, we’d like to try and define the word 'gymnastics’ a little: it’s actually a collective term for many sports, such as gymnastics (artistic gymnastics), trampolining, street dance, aerobics, etc. And even though ‘gymnastics’ is a big part of our training environment, you won't find any trampolines, mats, beams, vaults or pommel horses in a CrossFit hall. There’s actually a really simple reason for this: the aim of practising our sport is – and always will be – 'getting fitter'.

When we talk about beautiful or good movement in relation to ‘CrossFit Gymnastics’, it’s actually about how well you perform a movement while taking care of your body, muscles and joints. Even though it often takes quite an advanced technique to execute a certain movement properly, when you do it as part of a workout or competition you will be awarded points for the number of repetitions you do (or the distance you cover) within a certain period of time; in gymnastics, you are judged on the difficulty of your movements and the precision with which you execute them.

What equipment do we use during lessons? Various items, such as the floor, rings, pull-up bars and climbing ropes. The most common movements we do are air squats, push-ups, pull-ups, ring dips, muscle-ups, handstand push-ups and handstand walks. Many of these movements require a high degree of skill. But don’t worry – we’ll teach you what you need to know in our specially designed gymnastics classes.

The benefits of gymnastics

One of the maim motivations to do gymnastics is that it has the ability to have a big impact on your day-to-day comfort levels and significantly improves your overall fitness: it helps to improve your precision, agility, coordination and balance, as well as promoting speed, agility, strength and cardiovascular endurance. And especially when it comes to neurological skills (precision, coordination, balance and agility), gymnastics is the key to success!

The great thing is that when you practise this discipline correctly and regularly enough, you can achieve greater control over your body, which is also extremely useful when doing almost any other sport!
